‘The Creature’
A Painting for Guillermo Del Toro
The Story…
This turned out to truly be the highlight of my year. As a longtime fan of the Frankenstein book, having studied it multiple times across my education and playing The Creature once myself, I adored Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation from the get-go.
At the beginning of November, I visited the exhibition of the film’s props at Selfridges in London, having not yet seen the film. To see the artistry of GDT, Kate Hawley and her team, and Mike Hill up close was truly a privilege. They’re masters of their crafts.
After I’d seen the film, I learnt that GDT and Jacob Elordi were doing a talk at the British Library here in the UK that I sadly didn’t manage to get tickets to in person. Inspired by the artistry behind the film and aware that there was a time limit before they arrived, I got to work.
The painting itself was completed in two days, and the custom frame took an additional four days. After a series of cold emails to various agents/managers and the British Library itself, I was put in touch with Netflix’s PR team. While they didn’t have time in the schedule to organise a meeting with me in person, they asked me to deliver the painting to their office in London two days before the talk for them to give to GDT.
Within the span of a month, and through a series of cold emails, I delivered a painting to be given to one of my favourite directors and visionaries in Hollywood. I am eternally grateful to all who contributed to this achievement. Thank you for making a budding artist’s dream come true!
